Richard Holbrooke, a diplomat who served every Democratic president from LBJ to Obama and who’s best known for brokering the 1995 Dayton Accords, bringing an end to the war in Bosnia, died late last night following 21-hour emergency heart surgery on Friday. He was the president’s special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan; according to reports, his last words before going under for surgery were, “You’ve got to stop this war in Afghanistan.”

George Packer’s long profile, from last September, is well worth your time.
