Strut Your, Err, Mustache, at the NYC Beard and Mustache Competition

  • A pretty good mustache, all things considered.

I’ve had facial hair on and off for the last 15 years, but I don’t think it’s ever been impressive enough to warrant entering a competition. Particularly now, as I make my way up and down Bedford Avenue to the subway, confronted by all manner of working-class Victorian pilation, my humble face sweater seems worth only its warmth factor.

So I will NOT be entering the much ballyhooed NYC Beard and Mustache Competition (this Saturday, December 4th, 6pm at Club Europa in Greenpoint), but I may just head up there to see the latest in Van Dykes, Fu Manchus, French Forks and, of course, handlebars (if you need a little help with the variety, head here). And not only will one enjoy the beautiful and dizzying spectacle of Brooklyn’s finest facial hairists, the even itself is for a good cause, namely “to spread awareness and educate the public about the catastrophic health effects on 9/11 first responders, as well as to provide assistance to relieve these great heroes of the financial burdens placed on them over the last nine years.”
