Vampire Weekend and Bright Eyes to Headline MTK Festival in East Hampton

Word came this morning that the inaugural Music to Know festival will be headlined by Vampire Weekend and Bright Eyes. The two-day event will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14, in East Hampton, NY, and the lineup also includes, among others, Matt and Kim, Cold War Kids, Chromeo, Tame Impala, Ra Ra Riot and M. Ward. Tickets are on sale for a fairly steep $195 (that doesn’t include lodging of course), or you could drop a few extra bucks for the $695 VIP pass, which includes some free booze and a few air-conditioned tents, but still no lodging. According to Stereogum, bands will play from noon to 10pm each day, and Vampire Weekend and Bright Eyes will headline Saturday and Sunday respectively. No word yet on set times/days for the other artists, but we’ll let you know when that info becomes available. In the meantime, think about how hilarious it’s gonna be when the ironic boat shoe-wearers inevitably wind up coming across non-ironic boat shoe-wearers.

  • Huh. I feel like usually when festivals are kind of expensive, I’m able to say: Well, sure it’s $150, but the price of seeing the top three or four bands playing separately would be well over $200! In this case, it seems reversed and $200 for this lineup seems like an overreach. Mathwise, I’d estimate that Vampire Weekend + Bright Eyes + Matt & Kim + Cold War Kids = $150 in seeing-separately terms. This could really use a Mountain Goats or a New Pornographers or an Okkervil River or (however unlikely/impossible) a reunited Rilo Kiley for that crucial added value.

Also, I like how NYC is willing to try pretty much every single possible area location to bring off a decent east coast festival (I really do like this, even though it never seems to work).
