Remember how awesome it was last summer when the Brooklyn Museum announced that, starting in October 2010, it would stay open until 10pm on Thursdays and Fridays? How many evenings did you visit? Not enough apparently, because last week the Brooklyn Museum announced that effective next month the museum will no longer stay open late on Fridays.
On Fridays the Museum will go back to its 6pm closing time, but on Thursdays it will remain open until 10pm, with an ongoing schedule of special events like screenings, concerts, talks and guided visits. In a statement accompanying the press release announcing the new hours, Brooklyn Museum Director Arnold L. Lehman said:
Although the difficult economy made it impossible to serve our visitors two evenings each week, based on our good experience with the history of First Saturdays, we believe that by focusing our resources on Thursday nights, we can more effectively serve our audience by presenting an increasingly dynamic and engaging schedule of programs each Thursday.
This coming Friday June 24th is your last chance to spend an intimate evening with the collection and temporary exhibitions of the Brooklyn Museum.
