The saddest part of these news clips might be how adamantly the newswoman at the end states that “drugs were not the cause” of Elvis Presley’s death. Or how the news anchor calls it the end of “one of the two most spectacular careers in the history of American entertainment, the other being Frank Sinatra’s,” in a stern, declarative manner, as if there’s no room or reason for discussion. Thirty-four years after Elvis’ death, his impact on music goes without saying, but it was clear even then: one reporter notes how Elvis’ “hot, stomping, steaming, sexy kind of music” halted the “remote, obscure, bloodless” reign of bebop. That’s definitely the best part. [via The Stranger]
