3rd Ward, that Bushwick-Williamsburg border-straddling workshop and art training space that epitomizes DIY Brooklyn announced Wednesday on its blog that it will open the 2nd 3rd Ward in the 6th borough, Philadelphia. The Morgan Avenue institution has big plans for its three-building outpost in the hip Northern Liberties section of Philly, and expects to be up and running by summer 2012.
The new 3rd Ward complex will include a one-story concrete warehouse, three-story brick warehouse and historic church—and, judging from the rendering at top, an adjoining vacant lot will become an outdoor cafe. Other amenities will be a gallery, retail store, rooftop garden and an event space. And of course there will be the same assortment of workshops, studios and teaching spaces, including but not limited to:
– Wood/ Metal Shop
– Prototyping Lab with CNC mills and laser cutters
– Media Lab/Coworking space with conference rooms, reference library & kitchenette
– Studio for screenprinting, painting and more
– Jewelry Studio
– Fashion/Textile Studio
– Culinary Classroom
– Circuitry/Maker Lab
So if the only thing keeping you from relocating to Philly was its lack of a pleasantly familiar learning and workshop space, you can start planning your move now.
