In 2011, for the first time since 1963, the number of murders committed in Brooklyn was fewer than 200, according to comments made by Ray Kelly reported by the Park Slope Patch. The police commissioner—and not his press guy, otherwise we wouldn’t believe it—made the remarks at a gun-buyback event in Bed-Stuy, which he credited, along with other programs like them, for helping lower the number of murders. There were just over 500 murders citywide in 2011, meaning Brooklyn’s 195 account for a heck of a lot of them. Brooklyn typically leads the boroughs in sheer numbers, though when adjusted for population the Bronx tends to have a higher murder rate.
