The 10 Most Ridiculous Things Old White Men Have Proposed About Women And Vaginas

Whether it’s Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett telling women seeking abortions they can just close their eyes to deal with mandatory ultrasounds, or a Georgia House rep regaling his colleagues with stories about delivering dead cow and chicken fetuses in order to justify women carrying dead human fetuses to term, the past few months have been rife with shockingly inept, old white men proposing shockingly inept things about women, vaginas and female health. We figured it would be a good time to look back. Oh, and in the spirit of sex positivity, we will try to use the word “vagina” as many times as possible throughout this retrospective. Vagina.

1) Santorum Super PAC donor Foster Friess reminiscing on aspirin as contraception back in the day, (“The gals put it between their knees, and it wasn’t that costly”) will forever remain a classic in the collection of horrifying and ridiculous things old white men have said about vaginas.

  • What does this have to do with being white? I can think of several practices in both Africa and the Middle East that trump every last thing on this list.

  • Would those practices make these quotes, from old white men, any less ridiculous?

  • Not that you necessarily expect an answer, but, as you can see with the Head Start one especially, one goal of the above-quoted individuals is to maintain, through biological means, the subservience of women to existing hierarchies of social and economic power, hierarchies which these dudes in their infinite whiteness sit atop. Read “whiteness” in this context as a shorthand signifier for unearned and unexamined privilege, which isn’t universal of course but is remarkably consistent throughout the examples Syd cites.

  • It’s also worth noting that in order to maintain or resurrect this privileged power Mark mentions, many of these people are undermining the very principles they have sworn to uphold, especially with regard to protection of individual rights (see Fourth Amendment). Of course, if women are considered less like people and more like farm animals, probing and taxing and otherwise regulating reproductive and sexual activity is more justifiable…as part of an outdated and warped worldview that says men should have dominion over the earth and all its creatures. The fact that we have to address this in the United States in 2012 is insane.

  • “If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.”

  • @mike – nah, it’s just a corny-ass self-loathing white brooklyn-y kind of way to title an article…

  • @Alex
In this case, it’s straight-up loathing.

  • This just makes me sad. Sad for these men that are stubbornly clueless. Sad for the Tax payers that are paying the salaries of most of these men, because they are public officials. As well as sad for the public that agrees with or elects these men to be the voice of many. I’m also a little astounded at how uneducated and immature these geezers are. You’ld think that if you had already been a parent you might have a better understanding about kinds of tough decisions people need to make in life, and you wouldn’t vilify people who are pro quality of life. Not to mention sounding like a FUCKING idiot while you do it. Vagina!

  • Before jumping the gun and getting a huge dick about this situation, did any of you even watch the video? Most of you seem so disconnected from reality that this situation probably doesn’t make any sense. Obviously the decision to cut head start wasn’t an easy one. There is not enough money to keep programs like this going; when you don’t have money, you cut programs, simple. None of these men made excuses, they only used examples from their own lives to show that life can go on without handouts from the government. They even pointed to churches and other private organizations as the solution to cutting head start. To villainize them for doing what they were elected to do, for doing something every local, state, and federal government across this country should be doing, is flat out ridiculous.

  • As a proud Brooklyner hailing from Frederick County, I am ashamed that those morons made it on to the list. I didn’t elect them, but wow, this is embarrassing.

  • So this jerk Terry England is suggesting we treat women like farm animals?

  • Can someone explain why men who conquest women are “real men”, whereas a woman who desires intimacy, is a “slut”?
