Advisers to the Superfund cleanup of the Gowanus Canal have suggested the project have a mascot, the Post reports. “The cleanup will be long, boring and probably disgusting, so we want to make sure people are aware of what’s going on in an easy and fun way,” one member of the community advisory group told the paper. Among the major contenders: “Muck the Shark,” based on the shark that reached the canal in 1950 to be shot dead by police; “Gowanda the Seal,” after a seal who reached the polluted waterway in 2003; and “Sludgie the Whale,” after the 12-foot minke who died within a day and was hauled out by a 20-foot crane.
