In 2006, Alie Shaper founded Brooklyn Oenology (or BOE), a New York-focused winery that sources every element of its wine—from the grapes to the art on the labels—as locally as possible. And while it’s true that there aren’t any vineyards in Brooklyn itself, all of the wines are products of New York’s most-acclaimed wine-growing regions, like the Finger Lakes and the North Fork. (The company ferments its wines in the latter.) BOE offers a variety of reds and whites, including two excellent table wines—Social Club Red and Social Club White. But our favorite is the Cab/Petit Verdot/Syrah/Merlot blend, Motley Cru. Perfect pun aside, this red has a rich, smooth mouthfeel with a peppery kick and would pair perfectly with anything that could stand up to its bold flavor. Also, it’s called Motley Cru. That counts for so, so much.
