Drink Local: The Best Booze Made in Brooklyn

Based in Red Hook, this boozer makes one drink: a liqueur of an inky Dimetapp purple, made from fermented hibiscus flowers. On its own, Sorel starts off sweet—that’s the cane sugar—and finishes spicy; that’s the clove, the nutmeg, the ginger. But who sips liqueur on its own anymore? Best to use it to kick something else up a notch; the company’s website features almost two dozen recipes—mostly cocktails, also foodstuffs—but you can probably just make one up like we just did at our desk: some, uh, whiskey, and some, uh… Sorel! Hey, both of these things just got better.
