Your Vaguely Patriotic Fourth of July Playlist

What a beauty.

  • What a beauty.

You’ll surely need a playlist tomorrow to soundtrack your sunburnt burger-flipping intoxication. This probably isn’t the one. For that, may we suggest a steady rotation of “Jack & Diane” and every Tom Petty song ever written? Maybe cue up Jay-Z’s new album somewhere around 4pm, about the time people have drank enough to sloppily rhapsodize about his role as an American icon and think they sound smart? Drunk people trying to sound smart are always a hoot. And an American tradition! But you’ll likely need a little something to listen to outside of the BBQ pit this weekend, at which point the playlist below (last year’s L Mag-curated Fourth of July mix took a geographic spin through the country (listen here), this one sticks to songs with “red,” “white” or “blue” in their titles. IT’S AS IF THE AMERICAN FLAG MORPHED INTO A PLAYLIST FOR YOU TO LISTEN TO ON YOUR COMPUTER AND/OR MOBILE CELLULAR DEVICE. Pretty much exactly like that.

Happy 4th, you guys. Stay safe out there and remember that even if it’s overcast, you should still wear sunscreen, as the chance of skin cancer is not completely eliminated.
