Brooklyn Poets Yawp
Taking its name from Whitman, who sang of sounding his barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world (and who serves as the group’s mascot), this meeting happens every second Monday at 61 Local, a bar right outside the Bergen Street F stop. Starting at 7pm, they host a writing class, and an hour later the opening mic starts, lasting another hour or so. Poets—and it’s for poets only—are given three minutes each on the mic and, so we hear, it’s the best poetry event in the borough.
