Solange Knowles Totally Subtweeted Miley Cyrus

Solange gives great bitch face, and even better subtweets.

Ah, so. There was a lot of big news on twitter yesterday, what with the discovery that @horse_ebooks is run by BuzzFeed, and Bill Clinton and Bill Gates posing for a joint selfie and, well, I don’t know what else exactly but I’m sure there was lots of other very important stuff. However! Probably the most important thing that happened on twitter yesterday was erstwhile Brooklyn resident Solange Knowles subtweeting none other than Miley Cyrus, whose MTV VMA performance right here in Brooklyn last month is still talked about all the damn time. So, what were the subtweets?

Well, first, let me just say that the beauty of these subtweets are that not only do they not include Miley Cyrus’s twitter handle, but they don’t even mention her by name. And yet, it’s pretty clear to anyone who has consumed any media at all lately that they are about Miley Cyrus and her love of twerking and appropriation of some African-American cultural signifiers. Or, at least, some of the things Cyrus has been referencing have to do with black culture, others might have to do with the inbred, 17th-century Spanish monarch Charles II, maybe. At least, that’s something that Elspeth Reeve speculates over on The Atlantic Wire, and really there’s some case to be made there. I mean, I don’t think Reeve is implying that Billy Ray Cyrus and whoever Miley’s mother is (is her name Tish? I’d look it up but I don’t want to find out that it isn’t Tish because that’s too perfect a name) are cousins or something, but, hey, you never know, right? I guess that’s not the point right now, though. The point right now is that Miley Cyrus has been employing provocative and troubling racial imagery for some time now, and addresses it (albeit inadequately, in my opinion) in her recent interview with Rolling Stone.

There have been a lot of excellent articles published on the topic of Miley Cyrus, ratchet culture, twerking, and her propensity for wearing grills and so I won’t retread that ground. And anyway, there’s no need to do that, because with two perfect subtweets today, Solange Knowles gave Miley Cyrus the twitter equivalent of a stone-cold bitchface yesterday. It was kind of excellent. It’s unclear if Miley saw them though because she didn’t address it on twitter, just posted a ton of pictures from her Rolling Stone shoot, as one does. But that’s why subtweets are the best. THey’re not for the person you’re insulting, they’re for the rest of us to enjoy. So, enjoy!
