clipping. – “Body & Blood”

Noise-rap, horrorcore, whatever shady sub-genre box you want to put this in…it’s ferocious enough to power-drill its way out.

Container – “Glaze”

Who needs a strobe light when you’ve got a geyser of sheet-metal sparks?

Liars – “Mess on a Mission”

Celebrating their artistic maturity by donning bandit masks and attending a rave they are way too old for. Seriously, bless these guys. I hope they make records forever.

Wye Oak – “Glory”

Jenn Wasner, afraid that her guitar playing was becoming a songwriting crutch, ditched her axe entirely for the synth-saturated Shriek. Even so, she still found space in her cold, airy pop compositions to shred a bit.

Xiu Xiu – “Stupid in the Dark”

Jamie Stewart’s perverse pop sense, calibrated exclusively for self-pleasure, can still occasionally lead him to a big, grody chorus. It makes opposite sense that his self-proclaimed “darkest album” should contain his catchiest song in years.
