Metropolitan Museum of Art
Though it might not rank as the rarefied sort of blockbuster exhibit that makes your heart race with anticipation, this gathering of intimate, delicate, materially exquisite portrait miniatures is nonetheless a fine addition to your fall calendar. Rather than inspire palpitations, it might well serve to pacify them—which seems a preferable side-effect, actually, not least since the Met’s November show of El Greco is quite likely to quicken your tick.

Art of Mourning
However strange it might seem to refer to it as such, this celebration of mourning includes artifacts from a number of private collections to give viewers a broadly intimate glimpse of the imagery, memorabilia, and paraphernalia associated with it. The show has already been up for a little while, but it’s worth noting since the museum is still quite new—and since it seems like a great place to visit as Halloween looms on the horizon.
