Night Tide (1961)
Directed by Curtis Harrington
Harrington, a teen acolyte of Josef von Sternberg and James Whale, and an associate of Maya Deren and Kennth Anger, grafted an underground gothic sensibility onto exploitation fare throughout an eclectic career. His first feature, shot resourcefully and evocatively at an off-season pier, stars Dennis Hopper, then himself navigating Hollywood’s studio system and counterculture, as a naïve sailor who falls for “Mora the Mermaid,” a sideshow attraction—or something more? Tarot readings, beachside drum circles and secret languages remind of Harrington’s interest in the occult, never uncannier than in this story of selves split between rational daylight and mythical nighttime. Mark Asch (June 6, 14, 7:30pm; June 19, 24, 10pm at the Spectacle)
