Attention all mixologists, we’ve teamed up with Southern Comfort to bring you THE 100 PROOF PROJECT, a dynamic art and mixology competition inspired by Southern Comfort 100 Proof.

On January 18th we will be holding a grand thunderdome of Brooklyn’s finest cocktail artists (one of whom should be you!) competing to create the perfect SoCo 100 cocktail. The best and the brightest will come out to try your original concoctions alongside a panel of the industry’s top professionals who will ultimately select a single champion.

So you there, with those hands that have squeezed many a lime and personality that has charmed many a patron; we want you to create your own unique SoCo 100 cocktail and serve it to us at our event. Winners will be featured in a profile The L Magazine alongside their recipe and also receive a free trip to New Orleans.

Please send an email to SoCo100@thelmagazine.com with the following information:

The L Magazine and Southern Comfort have teamed up to bring you “The 100 Proof Project,” an art competition comprised of three phases: An open call to artists working in various mediums including painting, photography, drawing and sculpture; a website documenting the process of artists creating an original piece of artwork commissioned and inspired by Southern Comfort 100 Proof with rigorous participation from the art community via social networks, reviews, blogging, and video; and an exhibition showcasing the works with a one night reception that will serve as judgement day with a panel of art critics, curators, and artists. One work will be voted and chosen to be on the face of a painted billboard in Williamsburg and the pages of Brooklyn Magazine. Each artist will receive a $200 commission for their work, and the final selected artist will receive a free trip to New Orleans.

The four C’s are of utmost importance in this competition: COMMUNITY, COLLABORATION, COMMUNICATION, and CREATIVITY. We seek to build a platform where interaction between artists and their viewers are active through daily updates and conversations on our website and social networks. We seek to redefine or consider the artist as a small business, entrepreneurs with a passion to not only create but build their own economy outside the realms of a rigid and inaccessible art world establishment. We are building a support system where artists and the community can speak and be heard, where art goes beyond the studio and gallery and interaction is immediate, direct, and engaged.

Southern Comfort is committed to supporting the artist community and our efforts extend specifically to artists working in Brooklyn, not because it is a guaranteed marketing campaign, it’s rather a risky counterintuitive effort as we seek to upturn current notions of commercial sponsorships and embrace the partnership for a mutual appreciation for community and creativity.

Schedule:
Deadline to submit: EXTENDED TO DEC 7
Commissioned work: Dec 1 – 31
Prepare for exhibition: Jan 1 – 11
Exhibition / Panel: Jan 18

To submit, please send an email to 100proofartist@thelmagazine.com with the following info:

Questions:
How do you contribute to the art community in Brooklyn?
What does it mean to be a SoCo Artist?
How do you define the role of the artist today and how might this competition open up that role to different opportunities?

Official rules can be found at 100proofbk.com. Must be 21 or older. Valid in NY only.

Last week, the young, bold and Brooklynful gathered at Good Company in Williamsburg to celebrate the launch of our second issue of Brooklyn Magazine. They drank Tiger Beer and Kopparberg Cider, and took home several samples of Vita Coco to help the inevitable Brooklyn Magazine hangover. Check out photos by Joe Hume here:

This Wednesday, come with us somewhere exotic. No, not Delaware! McCarren Park, uh-duh. Our annual free movie series SummerScreen presented as part of the EPIX Movie Free-For-All series continues this Wednesday with our beloved comedy about the ancient Native American town Milawaukeé, Wayne’s World. Come sit with us, enjoy a snack from Pizza Moto, V-Spot, Bark Hot Dogs, or Coolhaus, drink a can of beer from Six Point, and grab a free bag of Pop Chips and stop by the Vitamin Water tent for a sample or five.

Before the movie starts at sundown, enjoy a free musical performance from YEllowDogs—a very awesome and well-sounding band chosen for us by the geniuses over at Free Williamsburg. There will also be boatloads of raffles and prizes; EPIX will be signing people up to win free iPad 2’s at their tent, and Film Biz Recycling will be giving away an entire briefcase full of awesome, Wayne’s World friendly items. What could those items possibly be? Foam trucker hats? Gun racks? White jumpsuits? Rob Lowe? Enter to win and find out. Find one of our gorgeous interns in a sea-foam green L Magazine shirt and give them your name to enter the drawing.

See you Wednesday, unless you’re not worthy. Happy Summer!

Not since our last Audiophile have we experienced such great fashions, cocktails, and incredible music. The night began like it always does; free booze and the application of lots of neon lipstick, and continued with performances from PHONY PPL and Theophilus London. It was awesome, and the brave soul John Rogers took photos. Check ’em out, and be a fan of Audiophile on Facebook to get updates and more info.

Last week, the rain stopped, the temperature rose, and we all gathered on the rooftop terrace of Bumble & Bumble to celebrate up and coming artists from SculptureCenter. Blue Marble Ice Cream and Bite Size Kitchen provided the snacks, Chelsea Brewing provided the beer, and the people of Bumble & Bumble provided the much needed hair consultations. Check out the photos here.

The “L” in our publication name could stand for a lot of things; love, lust, loneliness, lomo tacos. But for one night, we rented out our letter to the ladies over at The Real L Word Season 2, and threw them a huge party to show them what our space in the alphabet is made of. CREEP and DJ Rehka were there, along with gallons and gallons of red wine. Also, everyone was beautiful. Don’t believe us? Well, we’d never use our letter to be Liars.

Last week we celebrated the final round of our annual (drunk) fiction-reading series, Literary Upstart sponsored by New School and Harper Perennial. There, we heard stories, drank beers, and no one fell in the water of Galapagos Art Space (at least not during the readings). Check out photos below, and follow @thelmagazine for updates on when next year’s deadline is.
