Registration for the Brooklyn Greenway Half and 5K is Open

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI), in partnership with South Brooklyn Running Club, presents the Brooklyn Greenway Half — the only half marathon and 5K exclusively on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The third annual Brooklyn Greenway Half will take place on Sunday, October 18, 2015.

The Brooklyn Greenway Half takes runners on a 13.1-mile journey along the waterfront on a Red Hook-to-Greenpoint loop, offering memorable views of the skylines of midtown and lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges. The 5K course leaves from the Columbia Waterfront District, runs through Brooklyn Bridge Park and turns around at Jane’s Carousel. (more…)

Bike from Greenpoint to Rockaway Beach on The Epic Ride

The 7th annual 40-mile bike ride from Greenpoint to Rockaway Beach along the Brooklyn-Queens waterfront will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2015.

It can be easy to forget that Brooklyn is, for the most part, surrounded by water. From the East River and the New York Bay, to Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Brooklyn’s coastline is worth a tour. And there’s no better way to see all of it in one day than by bike.

Registration is now open for The Epic Ride, a 40-mile bike ride from Greenpoint to Rockaway Beach presented by Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI). Now in its seventh year, this tour of the Brooklyn-Queens waterfront will take place on Saturday, July 25.

Riders will have the opportunity to discover hidden and far flung neighborhoods, pedal through city, state, and national parks and take in spectacular bridge and city views along the Brooklyn Waterfront and Jamaica Bay Greenways. Last year’s event saw nearly 1,000 cyclists take part and this year’s ridership is expected to grow. The route will showcase the potential of a fully completed Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway combined with a completed Jamaica Bay Greenway and will travel along existing, new, and soon-to-break-ground Greenway segments. The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership announced the inaugural Make It in Brooklyn Innovation Summit, which will be held June 25, 2015 at locations throughout the Brooklyn Cultural District.

The summit will bring together 300 of Brooklyn’s leading innovators, makers, builders, and entrepreneurs to explore how Brooklyn can continue its ascent as an international center for commerce and culture.

Discussion topics will include real estate, the arts, tech innovation, restaurant management and the future of manufacturing in the borough. The event will culminate with a pitch contest, where Brooklyn startups will pitch their best ideas to a panel of industry leaders with $50,000 in seed funding on the line.

The day starts at 8 a.m. with a real estate breakfast held at BAM Lepercq Space. There will be a food truck lunch and a cocktail hour right before the pitch contest.

New Views: Brooklyn Waterfront Tastes, the 11th annual summer benefit party for Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, returns on Wednesday, June 17, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. A stellar line-up of Brooklyn restaurants and dessert makers will be serving unlimited portions of their best dishes at Glasserie in Greenpoint.

Sheldon Silver. Michael Grimm. It seems as if every time you check your news feed there’s another New York politician being accused of political corruption. And those are just the accusations of the illegal influence of money on politics. When the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. FEC that private corporations and unions were permitted by the Constitution to advertise for or against political candidates, the door to corporate influence on politics was thrown wide open.

In this climate, does your vote even matter? Will your voice be heard?

On Wednesday, April 8, at 7 p.m., BRIC is bringing together politicians, writers, and activists for the latest event in their town hall series, Big Money & Politics: Can Your Voice Count?
