Admit it. Sometimes you find yourself in a fancy grocery store, staring at a fruit you can’t name or a sauce you can’t pronounce. You think to yourself, What would I even do with this? Will I ever be the kind of person that knows how to use star anise in a recipe?

Blue Apron makes learning about new (and delicious) ingredients fun. Their weekly recipes are designed to introduce you to new flavors while gently showing you your way around the kitchen. Best of all, these fresh ingredients from small farms and specialty vendors are shipped to you without a grocery store mark-up. That means the ingredients are more affordable, you don’t buy more than you need, and you won’t spend an hour trying to find them in your local gourmet supermarkets. And if you sign up now, you’ll receive two free meals on your first order.

Following are six of the more fun ingredients to be featured in recent Blue Apron recipes. There are a lot more where they came from!

Epazote
Done with kale? Let us introduce epazote. Traditionally used in a range of Mexican dishes, epazote has a pungent fragrance often compared to citrus, savory herbs, or mint.

Sheldon Silver. Michael Grimm. It seems as if every time you check your news feed there’s another New York politician being accused of political corruption. And those are just the accusations of the illegal influence of money on politics. When the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. FEC that private corporations and unions were permitted by the Constitution to advertise for or against political candidates, the door to corporate influence on politics was thrown wide open.

In this climate, does your vote even matter? Will your voice be heard?

On Wednesday, April 8, at 7 p.m., BRIC is bringing together politicians, writers, and activists for the latest event in their town hall series, Big Money & Politics: Can Your Voice Count? The free event, to be broadcast live by Brooklyn Independent Media from the BRIC House Ballroom, will “take a look at the inequality created when wealth holds the power to make policies that affect us all.” (more…)

Feeling a little burned out by the stress of your day-to-day life? We get it. It’s tough to balance a job, regular gym visits, happy hours with your crew, and that improv class you promised yourself you’d sign up for this year…not to mention an occasional schlep to the laundromat and countless (unsuccessful) attempts to wean yourself off Seamless and bodega snacks. Recently, we’ve realized that the successful people in our lives have something in common: they all have some factor that pushes them to keep up the pursuit of their goals. For some people, it’s competition. For others, it’s the internal knowledge that there’s always room for improvement. Regardless of the source, if we follow that feeling we can transform it into something amazing.

car2go will get you to where you need to be: just take it, drive it, park it. It's fun, saves money and helps the environment.

Traveling over the winter holidays makes for a nice change of pace, especially if you’re going somewhere warm. But it can be hard to leave the comforts of home behind. Fortunately, for those of you who may have become addicted to the convenience of carsharing, your car2go account is one thing you can take with you.

There are over a dozen other North American cities served by car2go — Austin, Denver, San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Columbus, Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal — and your account allows you to use cars in any of those cities, just as you would in Brooklyn. Exploring new cities just got a whole lot easier.

Be a prepared traveler, though. Just as every city has its own character, it also has its own car2go parking rules, rates, and home area. You can familiarize yourself with these rules before you travel by going to car2go.com or clicking on any of the individual city links above.

This is all assuming that you already have a car2go account, of course. If you don’t, what are you waiting for? You’ve got a lot of urban exploration to do, and you’ll want to do it from behind the wheel of a car2go.

SSS ADWEB 141121 - Tree Lighting Creative - ALL PUBS - 01

You survived another year of mom’s over-cooked turkey, Aunt Sadie’s endless questions about your love life (or lack thereof), and a no-holds-barred Black Friday brawl. So instead of updating your OKCupid profile or trying to wall mount that 70″ flat screen you scored for $25 (and 2 black eyes), head over to South Street Seaport’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 2 at 5:45pm!

There you will find a giant tree just waiting to be lit up by you (arrive by 4pm to score a free Xyloband*), an amazing lineup of live entertainment–including a DJ set by Questlove–and lots of family-friendly activities, hot drinks, and so much more.

The Tree Lighting is but one part of the fantastic Winter/Edit holiday event series. The outdoor ice rink is open every day. Skate and helmet rentals are available, and residents in 10038, 10004, and 10005 zip codes receive 50% off admission and rental fees with valid ID! Bring the whole family and enjoy warm drinks, live entertainment and art on ice all winter long, only at the Seaport.

While you’re there, don’t forget to stop in and visit the many great vendors. Grab a bite at Ambrose Hall, Haagen Dazs or one of the delicious food trucks. Check off your holiday gift list at Guess, Superdry, Pasanella’s and many more. Or stroll through the Fulton Stall Market, open every day from 11am to 5pm.

Check out the all the details, including ice rink hours of operation, at SouthStreetSeaport.com.

Christmas is nothing without Christmas trees. And even if your apartment is a closet and you don’t want to clean up all those pine needles, you still take a big breath in when you walk by Christmas tree vendors, see all of the misfit, Charlie Brown trees, and dream about taking them home.

Luckily, with South Street Seaport’s Annual Tree Lighting on December 2 at 5:45 PM, you don’t have to worry about carting home a conifer; they’ve got a humongous tree covered in thousands of LED lights and bright ornaments. And did we mention the event is free? That sure beats dollar store ornaments and belting “All I Want for Christmas Is You” with your roommates.
