Welcome back BBs, we sure did miss ya. As a Music Fan, we’re confident you’re either counting your personal piles of ill-gotten gains before heading off to SXSW or sneering at all the Coachella hat wearing condo dwellers who’re blowing tug boats full of cash to jam into sweaty shows. Just imagine them dripping in perspiration whilst wobbling on sneaker platforms or shifting uncomfortably in Docs desperately trying to catch a glimpse of cool. But hey, as the thinking goes, these people will be amongst the Music Professionals and are paying good money for perceived authenticity when they recount their trip down to “South By” (again) this year and lament that, wow it’s so much more commercial than it used to be. Or perhaps you’re a band heading south to play some shows at SXSW in which case, good luck– the only SXSW stories I’ve heard involve depraved benders and near death experiences. But if you’re lucky, you might get to shake it with Big Freedia and her crew in a Texaco parking lot while gobbling down Popeyes. True story, not me of course but this guy I know.

So unless you’re a band with dreams of riches and recognition lodged in your pupils (go girl!) or a human with actual riches, (in which case help a girl out) you’ll be staying right here at home amongst the slowly dying snow mounds. In that case, we highly recommend you get your show on before SXSW starts because things might get pretty deserted around here. But check back with us next week just to be sure, eh?

Punk Night

Pox, Gowanus Mutant Kommandos, Pawns, Slav, Deli Girls

Saturday March 14th, 8 pm at Palisades: $8 at the door

A night of non-stop nasty at Palisades is just what the doctor ordered this week, and this show will definitely get you warmed up for annual punk fest New York’s Alright happening next month. A mystery band is headlining. The invite offers few clues as to who or what is behind this act, save for one titillating hint: “NYC punk ultra group.” No links, no nothing. But based on the rest of the lineup, we’re putting our bets on awesome. Also on the bill are Gowanus Mutant Kommandos, these guys truly put the “anus” in Gowanus with their organ fueled, ’70s nostalgia punk (i.e. sporting an actual mohawk). Their get-ups can make you feel like you’ve walked into a wax museum but when it comes down to it they rip, and that’s all that matters.

Once again Pawns (post-punk, Ian Curtis worshippers) are making an appearance. This band has been absolutely everywhere the past two weeks, and by everywhere I mean playing several places located within a few mile radius. Joining them is Slav–merciless, raw as hell hardcore. No gimmicks, not now and probably not ever. Check out their requisite fuck-the-police song, “Yes, officer.” Deli Girls are a relatively new project–two ladies still in demo mode, but they’ve already got a pretty twisted sound going for them. Brutal vocals with a dry as desert roar over stripped, industrial synth beats. [ND]

Old Reliable

Mystery Lights, Cool Ghouls, Surfbort, Acid Dad

Wednesday March 11th, 8 pm at Union Pool: $10 at the door

True to name, members of Mystery Lights bring something mysteriously cinematic to their set: the intrigue of noir, the lonesome soul-searching of westerns, and the melodrama of pulp. It’s not groundbreaking garage psych to be sure, but it’s fun stuff loaded with good-time potential. Leave it to San Fran to deliver the dreamier, hazier side of garage repped this evening by Cool Ghouls. Surfbort bring transplant odes to adolescent suburban days of yore. Acid Dad opens, setting the tone for absolutely nothing to follow. Just playin’! They’ll probably just play more Ty Segall-inspired psych stuff. But hey, it’s cool– what’s not to love? [ND]

Distant Crooners and Local Darlings

Krill, Frankie Cosmos, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, LVL Up

Saturday March 14th, 8 pm at Silence Barn: $8 at the door

Massachusetts band Krill is celebrating the release of their new album A Distant Fist Unclenching this weekend at Silent Barn. That title has got to be either a cliché Hunter S. Thompson reference or a metaphor for sex. For Krill’s sake, I’ll assume it’s the latter. Their heartfelt, exasperated indie rock is a clear indication that love and lust and not politics are at play here. A few local bands that seem to be everywhere right now will play sing-a-long: Frankie Cosmos (who performed in our humble office back in December), Cloud Becomes Your Hand (whimsical, burbly, starry-eyed psych pop), and LVL Up. [ND]

No Two Alike

Sleepies, LODRO, Mexican Slang, Crosss, BBIGPIGG

Wednesday March 11th, 8pm at Shea Stadium: $8

Sleepies is probably the perfect name for a band as speedy as this– even if the references are inconsistent (punk? post-punk? grunge? indie? Dave Grohl? ugh) some things are always present, powerful drums, a runaway tempo. And better to have a sound that defies labels than one that can be easily pigeonholed.

LODRO isn’t just Lorde spelled incorrectly (thank your lucky stars people, not sure what the appeal of that is beyond watching a teenager make hilariously predictable teenage statements like not understanding the whole music criticism thing). Nay, this is some sooth swaying opium desert rock from… surprise! Brooklyn! Not that these tunes should be confined to just outside of Marfa or something, but closing your eyes and drifting away from the borough for a moment is strongly advised. Opening acts include visitors from our northern neighbors, Mexican Slang (dreamy lo-fi pop) and Crosss (fuzzy sludge garage), bands that couldn’t be more different, and finally local devilish, discordants BBIGPIGG. [ND]

Ice May Melt, a Cold World Remains

Lust For Youth, SØREN at Nothing Changes

Wednesday March 11th, 10 pm at Home Sweet Home: $8 at the door

Hey it’s been a while since these guys have played New York following the release of their new album last June. If you missed this Swedish post-punk dance wave act, you most certainly missed out. They’ve got that New Order passion, the endearing side of the ’80s, rather than heart-of-darkness coldness, it’s a heartbroken, hungover, hungry sort of cold. This (and a show at Baby’s All Right on Saturday) is your last chance to make like the cool kids and go check this band out before they take off for SXSW, the West Coast, and Japan– all places that are definitely not Brooklyn or even New York and therefore don’t really exist. SØREN bring a more distant, dark electronic vibe to the show. You will be given to fits of vibration. Very Ascetic House, very much we like. And because this is the second anniversary of Nothing Changes, shit’s bound to get cray. What else are birthdays for? [ND]

Oddly Correct

Show Me The Body, Hunnie Bunnies, KTB, Video Daughters, I Am Not A Sound

Saturday March 14, 9pm, 8 pm at Nola Darling:  $8

What a wild but oddly correct mixture of bands and sounds. Show Me The Body is a sludgy rock trio led by a guy rapping and playing a banjo. There is absolutely no theorem to explain why this works. Think along the lines of Rat King and the Beastie Boys. KTB is a most welcome collaboration from Guerilla Toss and Bugs and Rats. Together, they create a towering sound that creeps in all directions. The shrill vocals are the absolute creep icing on this delicious creep cake.

I heard that the Hunnie Bunnies existed years ago somewhere in subterranean Boston. A cacophonous mix of paint, yelling, fuzz, throbbing, and nudity. The duo reigned over Gay Gardens and the Whitehaus on the wildest nights wearing as much as nightgowns and as little as boxer briefs. Don’t let underwear fool you though, these are well constructed songs with danceable beats and a premeditated collection of sounds. They now live in Philly, but fortunately it’s not too far.

Video Daughters remind me of a Kansas Storm. It happens fast. Suddenly, you are surrounded in a blur of thrashing noise and psychedelia. It’s frantic and consuming, until the moment where it lifts and you are looking at something crystal clear. In this case, meticulously hypnotic rhythms and, if you listen closely, cleverly acerbic lyrics.

I Am Not A Sound is the young and ambitious Jake Saunders. Tell us more Jake. [Sarah Lutkenhaus]

Hello again friends, welcome to another cold ass week in hell. You think there’s an end in sight to Old Dude Winter’s icy grip around your numbed extremities? Sorry, nope. At least not for the foreseeable future. But if you’re nothing but a whippersnapper now and still planning to live a good long life–first of all, good luck with that. But secondly chill out on this deep freeze, relatively speaking it’s only temporary. Hope you caught that New York City Panel on Climate Change report that dropped like a bomb (rather bombogenesis, remember that scare?) earlier this week, because you’re gonna need it. The report detailed that chya, just as we suspected before the Big Freeze of 2k15, things are about to start heating up. Which means that, despite the spew coming from climate “experts” trying to tell you otherwise, it’s getting hot in here. End times y’all, boom. Time to boogie. (more…)

The last thing you want to hear right now is another person kvetching about the shit weather. Yeah it’s horrible out–venues are freezing right now, beers turn to slushies before you can sip em, and everyone can see you’ve been crying because your tears turn to icicles before you even have a chance to wipe them off your face. Woe is everyone, y’all!

Best way to stop feeling terrible in this final stretch of winter–seriously, just blink and when you open your eyes, you’ll be paper bagging it at Prospect Park, eating tacos on the curb, and frolicking out at Fort Tilden–is to warm yourself by the fire of these rad performances. I don’t know if you’ve heard of live music or remember what life was like before Spotify, but we’re here to inform you of one of the few real joys earned from subjecting yourself to the painful daily drudgery of living in money city: the long list of great shows happening in your own backyard. Wow guys, so I heard some of you actually subjected yourself to the Super Bowl and thus Katy Perry earlier this week. Personally, I’m ashamed. Even if you “just watched it for the ads,” like, gross– I’m still disappointed in you. Redeem thyself not with X number of Hail Marys, spellcasting, or prostration in front of candelabras, but by supporting what most humans would recognize as actual music. And, please, don’t think of this is as a chore, because this week there are two of us bringing you a bulletproof list of excellent music sound happenings.

Our Top Pick For The Week, Yep

Young Gutted, Show Me The Body, Mannequin Pussy, Heeney

Saturday February 7th, 8 pm @ Shea Stadium, tickets: $8 advance, $10 at the door

If you can only make it to one show this week– first of all, I pity you because this is New York City, baby– but secondly, you won’t be disappointed if you pick this one.

Featuring Show Me The Body, a surprisingly acoustic sludge band led by apparent badasses who ain’t got time for “transplants” and are politically astute to boot. All proceeds are going to the National Lawyer’s Guild. Why on earth would anyone want to give money to lawyers, you might ask? Well these lawyers are chillers because they provide free legal representation for protestors.

Yung Gutted (aka Antonio Hernandez) will tickle the opposite side of your auditory cortex with his deep, rich bass-heavy R&B beats. The Brooklyn-based producer released his first beat tape just two years ago– it’s available on Bandcamp for whatever price you feel is fair but, like, be nice–  however he’s developed a pretty loyal following since then and has garnered the attention of big-deals like Ratking.

Joining the headliners are Mannequin Pussy, a Philly pussy punk outfit that is probably the most badass amongst the pack of pussy bands, and Heeney will bring home the good boy rock n’ roll. [ND]

Yearn For The Mud

Wolvves, Aeon Rings, We Are Temporary, Skeleton Head

Friday February 6th, 8 pm @ Trans Pecos, tickets: $8 advance, $10 at the door

Do not dismiss these party garage punks for their adult transplant probz: “I’m going  home today/ I can’t think of what to say/ Coz my mom will see all my tattoos and I won’t know what to say.” Wolvves is so much more than that. Juvenile, perhaps, but who’s ever heard a good punk song replete with mature themes? Not me.

We’re not exactly sure what’s going on with the line up here, but lest we choose a slow death alone in the desert of NotCool, we won’t question the lovely people at Trans Pecos. I’m sure they knew what they were doing when the slapped a supremely cheesy goth band, Aeon Rings, on the bill along with another nostalgie de la boue-ish, ’80s outfit, Skeleton Head. Get this stuff while it’s hot because it won’t be around for long, we’re hoping. And that’s not necessarily because we don’t like it, we didn’t say that. It’s because we’ve got money on this. We’ve bet actual cash that this trend is nearing saturation. PM me if you wanna join the betting pool. [ND]

Act Now, Seriously

Screaming Females, Priests, Tenement, Vacation

Sunday February 28th, 10:30 pm @ Knitting Factory, tickets: $15

Hey! Just because there are like ten million bands participating in the Don Giovanni Records Showcase this weekend does not mean figuring out which show to attend should hurt your brain. We’ve subjected ourselves to brain pain for you. That’s what we’re here for, K?

If it weren’t for recent developments, we might have regretted to inform you that our pick– Screaming Females, Priests, Tenement, Vacation on Sunday night– was sold out. Dang! But something truly amazing has transpired: they’ve added a second show! A later one! So seriously make quick like jack rabbit and get your tickets now. Yeah, yeah we know this show is a couple of weeks off, but trust– we’re doing you a favor by giving you a heads up. If you’re seriously impatient, you can check out what’s happening this weekend instead.

If you’ve been living under a boulder (Or maybe in Boulder? Sorry, Colorado sucks) then maybe you haven’t heard of Screaming Females. This fantastic trio writes catchy indie diddies vaguely recalling 90’s rock, but really by now they are kind of their own institution. Also, the band juuuuust released a new album on Don Giovanni, Rose Mountain, and this show is the official party for that achievement. Priests will bring their fist-pumping sassy punk anthems from D.C., Tenement contributes their Midwest pop punk tunes, and last but not least is Vacation out of the Great State of Ohio, the land of a thousand disgusting punk bands. Hopefully You Didn’t Sleep On This One

Parquet Courts, Future Punx, Eaters

Monday February 9th, 8 pm @ Palisades, tickets: SOLD OUT

Everyone is goo goo ga ga for Parquet Courts. Yeah, yeah they sound like Pavement blah, blah blah. But for reals, these guys put on a fun show. But we don’t have to tell you that, the fact that tickets usually sell out within a handful of minutes probably convinced you already. That’s why we’re hoping you were smart about this one and bought your tickets ahead of time, otherwise you’re plumb outta luck.

Joining The Parkays are their label mates Future Punx, another band with a bunch of good shows under their belts. They seriously tore shit down at Aviv several weeks back, amirite? And the addition of Eaters– experimental minimal electronic meets catchy rawk riffs– to the bill really just emphasizes the need to get to this show at all costs. [ND]

New Ambience

Stage Hands, Tallesen, Jono Mi Lo, Middle Grey, Dean Cercone

Monday February 9th, 8 pm @ Silent Barn, tickets: $8 at the door

What happens when you combine soothing New Age vibes with a Netcentric outlook? This show, that’s what. You may remember our profile of Jono Milo over at Brooklyn Magazine– we spoke with the current artist-in-residence at Silent Barn about his experiments with algorithmic sampling. Chances are he’ll be breaking that program out at this show, and if you’re curious about what the hell he’s on to, we’re positive he’ll give you a rundown if you ask nicely.

Joining him is ambient act Stage Hands from um wtf where, Pennsylvania, and three local acts on a similar experimental electronic tip– Tallesen, Middle Grey, and Dean Cercone. [ND]

Noize Boyz & Girlz

The Tinnitus Music Series with Vessel, Container and Noveller

Wednesday February 4, 8pm @ The Wick, tickets: $15

YAY. It’s that time again for the down right flawlessly curated Tinnitus Music Series (dedicated to the forefront of extreme noise). Thanks to Blackened Music and Pitchfork’s Show No Mercy we are reminded of at least one reason we continue to live in New York. This week’s pairing of Vessel and Container is about exploring the stomping grounds between techno and noise. Both projects make incredibly human rhythms by pushing their instruments to lumber, crack, and pound forward.

Container’s Ren Scholfield leads you around in ferocious patterns that never settle anywhere long enough for you to stop moving. Sebastian Gainsborough (aka Vessel) comes out of the Bristol techno scene, but has baffled categorization with wandering melodies and grinding drums. Opening act Noveller may not be as pummeling as her bill mates, but the soundscape she builds will sharpen your senses and transport you to a celestial atmosphere, right before you dance your ass off. Forget It’s Winter

Human Resources, Train Trash, Plebian, Negative Gemini

Saturday February 7th,  9pm @ Bohemian Grove, tickets: $ a few

Jeremy Krinsley, member of Alan Watts, also plays solo as Human Resources. He’s been on the low as of late but for good reason– Krinsley is at work on a new Human Resources release for Godmode, which will be out sometime this year, hopefully soon. His last solo release, Oxyc Woody II (2012), is a collage of sweeping cinematic sounds and fractured melodies which are endlessly listenable. Building on the vocabulary of his previous releases, we can expect something at once modern and nostalgic. You can come see what he’s been up to in this tropical basement, and all but forget that it’s winter. Additionally, Train Trash has spent years hoarding gear and learning to make it work together in unlikely ways. The set will undoubtedly take you through many different dimensions. Come Get Lost

Hubble, Nick Klein, die Reihe

Sunday February 8th, 9 pm @ Silent Barn, tickets: $8

This is truly a night to indulge in sound. Ben Greenberg (Pygmy Shrews, Zs, The Men, Uniform) is the kind of guy you want to strangle and say:“STOP doing so many awesome things!” Of course, then you would be deprived of a lot of awesome things, so instead we get to  wait and see what he’s gonna do next.

Hubble is the culmination of Greenberg playing guitar for hours upon hours on his roof in the summers. He summons a flood of tones and patterns by tapping his guitar at light speed. This time he is even one-upping himself with a 1-2 hour-long piece with quadraphonic sound. Hear it, and believe.

Nick Klein, too, are you kidding me? So good! His music manages to create rhythmic pulses that are urban and simultaneously isolating. He bends the notes to the edge of comfort and has mastered the use of silence to build tension. Not to be missed. Die Reihe should more than satisfy your appetite for modular synth exploration and insane sounds. [Sarah Lutkenhaus]

(Hailu Mergia and Awesome Tapes From Africa)

Ugh. The holidays were seriously rough. Like New Year’s Eve falling on Wednesday this year probably took years off my life and will most certainly result in a premature end to some of my relationships. But whatever, those people were on my shit list anyway. And hey, just because it’s cold as a witch’s mammary gland and we’re all still hungover,  that doesn’t mean live music is on ice this week. People this is your last week to party, and there are plenty of excellent shows happening from now until next week when going back to work will involve, you know, actual work. We’ve got everything from New Year’s rock n’ roll parties (in the case you’re looking for more “dance”-oriented stuff, check out our Sleep When You’re Dead List) to events that are sure to snap you back to reality. Your resolution was to get off your butt and take advantage of all the cool stuff happening around the borough, right? Get to it.

It’s your weekly roundup of parties and shenanigans to keep the dance going all weekend long! This week, there are a ton of awesome lady DJs in the mix which always makes me so stoked to see, but an especially nice little beacon of hope this week after Resident Advisor released a Top 20 Live Acts of 2014 with not a single woman on the list. Bullshit, but whatever. Brooklyn knows what’s up with the ladies. Also, we know right now, with the holidays looming, you might be a little tight on cash, and we’re definitely right there with ya, BUT it just so happens to be a week with a lot of free (the majority, actually) and cheap stuff going on, so that’s certainly no excuse to like, sleep or whatever you were thinking about doing instead.

Welcome to our weekly installment of the ten best shows around town. And boy is it a good week for music. nite lifeeee

It’s time to party. Oh, you’re tired? I know it’s been a long week, but you’re not tired. I mean, you might think you’re tired–but you’re not. You see, this is Brooklyn, where no matter what time a day or what day of the week, people (probably a big group of people) are celebrating and drinking and dancing somewhere. Celebrating what? Anything. Everything. Birthdays, holidays, triumphs, fashion, music, science, freedom, sexuality, growth, birth, life, death… but, underneath whatever they tell themselves they’re celebrating, they’re really celebrating Brooklyn. We all know Brooklyn is special. Not just because bars and clubs are open until four or because it’s never that hard to find a warehouse or roof raging until long after the sun comes up, although those things certainly don’t hurt. Brooklyn is special because of the energy that lives inside of it, the energy it graciously gives us, say for example, to get out of bed when we’re the most hungover we’ve ever been in our entire lives. And it’s the same energy that regularly drives us to work 12-hour days or ride our bike up the Williamsburg bridge. We deserve to take in that energy when we need it because when we finally celebrate, all that energy gets filtered right back into Brooklyn. So, hop to it. We’ve brought you a concise plan for the best late-night parties this weekend so you can cut through all the bullshit and get to celebrating. Celebrate everything. Celebrate Brooklyn, because you’ll sleep when you’re dead. Or even just when you don’t live in Brooklyn anymore.
